Dental Cleanings and Examinations for Children

Dr. Hines works with patients of all ages and knows how to help children to feel comfortable while visiting the dentist. Families throughout the District of Columbia visit our dentist office to have their children’s teeth cleaned, and we recommend starting from a very young age to ensure that baby teeth grow in properly and stay healthy until the adult teeth are ready to come in.

Many people don’t realize how important healthy baby teeth are. In fact, children can get cavities and gum disease just like adults do, with one big, painful difference — children are less capable of understanding or dealing with discomfort. For this reason, we recommend that parents throughout Washington bring their children in for dental cleanings and examinations at least twice a year so that we can remove the harmful plaque and bacteria that cause cavities. When we’re diligent with care, children’s baby teeth are more likely to stay in until they are supposed to fall out, and their adult teeth will also stay healthier.

When caring for children, our staff has been trained to take it slowly and practice gentle dentistry. Building a rapport with our youngest patients will help them feel more relaxed during their dental appointments and make visiting the dentist fun instead of intimidating. We also recommend that parents take the time to read stories about going to the dentist and play games by teaching children how to examine their toy’s teeth. These little steps can go a long way to help children feel comfortable when getting their own teeth cleaned. If you have questions about scheduling an appointment for your child call (202) 723-2400.

Dental Cleaning and Examinations for Adults

Good oral health is important regardless of how old you are. But as teeth start to age, their protective enamel starts to wear away, making it easier to get a cavity and increasing risk for oral infection. The best way to combat this is by brushing and flossing throughout the day in addition to visiting the dentist on a regular basis. We offer flexible appointment times so that you can schedule an appointment around your work or family schedule, making it easier than ever to get your teeth cleaned.

Sensitive Teeth

Many adults avoid the dentist because they worry that their teeth will hurt or feel worse during the exam or subsequent cleaning. When working with the right dentist, however, it’s possible to feel comfortable regardless of how sensitive your teeth are. At Premier Dental Care, Dr. Hines cleans teeth using gentle dentistry for patients with sensitive teeth, and also offers a variety of sedation methods so that you don’t have to feel anything while getting your dental cleaning and examinations. Whether you need something to relax or direct pain medication, Dr. Hines can create a treatment plan that includes sedation so that you can remain comfortable.

Why do teeth get so sensitive? Often, it is because the enamel on the outside of the teeth is starting to wear away due to age, diet or improper oral health care. While brushing with desensitizing toothpaste can help, continued visits to the dentist can help ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. Common treatments like fluoride or sealants can help reduce sensitivity, so let us know about any discomfort you have been feeling.

Preventing Emergencies

Regularly scheduled dental cleaning and examinations can help to prevent a dental emergency, yet many adults go far too long in between visits to the dentist. And as a year or two goes by, infections can develop that create a painful situation or even a dental emergency. A minor cavity, for example, can be corrected with minimal discomfort. But if the infection spreads into the center of the tooth, the dental pulp can become infected and a root canal will become necessary. Fortunately, these types of infections can typically be avoided by scheduling an appointment twice a year with Dr. Hines.

It is important to keep in mind that healthy teeth are also less likely to become damaged or injured during an accident.

At Premier Dental Care, we believe that good oral hygiene at home is equally as important as visiting our office. So while you’re here, we’ll talk about ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. We always recommend that you use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. The brushing will keep harmful sugar and bacteria off of your teeth, and the fluoride will help to strengthen them. You should also floss daily to get food particles and bacteria out of hard-to-reach places. Following up with an antibacterial mouthwash will help to kill any remaining germs.

Your diet is also important to good oral health. Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat a diet rich in lean protein, green vegetables, dairy products and complex carbs so that your body gets the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. We can provide additional tips and information during your dental cleaning and examinations. To schedule your appointment with Dr. Hines call (202) 723-2400.
